    DNS server not found

    Locked

    by robison1948@frontier ·

I’m working with an inherited network in a small HS.
The one server (win20000) keeps comming up with DNS server not available as a log-on error on the server. I look nd the service is running. I’ve done a work-around by putting the ISP’s DNS server IP address on the local machines, but where should I look for the server configuration problem?

Check the TCP/IP configurations on the server and see what IP address is configured for DNS resolution. Generally, the server should point to itself and then to another DNS server for resolution.

You could also place root hints on the server to the ISP’s server.

Make very sure that you do NOT have the server listed as the only DNS server in the TCP/IP configurations. This can lead to the well known “DNS island” effect where the server can only resolve DNS names contained in it’s on space.

Dan “The Man” Petri has an excellent tutorial on configuring DNS on Windows 2000:
