DNS Setup WinNT

By sed55 ·
My company is a subdidiary of a lerger group, and my part is being sold off. I have been given the task of making sure that DNS and DHCP and WINS are set up correctly on our PDC. Are there any books out there that can steer me in the right direction? Is there such a thing as a DNS table and DHCP table on my NT 4.0 server?

Thanks

Dennis

Dennis,

The number of third party books on NT is a book itself. Check the computer book aisle at your local bookstore for anything from Que, New Riders, etc.

In your case, DNS, DCHP, and WINS all use a form of a database on your server. Thereare directories under C:\winnt\system32 (or whatever you used for your system directory) for each service.

But, you normally will NOT have to mess with these files. Occassionally, if the DHCP scope or WINS db gets corrupt, you will want to simply **** the files in the subdirectory away and start over. (This doesn't happen very often. Make sure you are on SP6)

Very quickly, load and start the WINS service on your PDC. In a small network, this is all you have to do. There is no more configuration.

Load and start DHCP. Then, using the DHCP manager you will have to add a server and create a scope. Both are very easy and straightforward. For the scope, there are defaults you can set that can be used for any scope or a specific scope. Again, on a small network, using global values is the easiest. You will want to set DHCP to have a range of IP addresses, any excluded addresses, the address for the DNS (1 & 2), the WINS server, and the default gateway.

For DNS, you will want to use the DNS manager to create zones for each domain that you service. You also need to register the host with the InterNIC if you plan to make it a public DNS. If not, there is no need to register it. Just create the zone for your domain and add the host records, MX records, CNAMEs, etc.

T'ain't no way Dennis and the request they had of you is awfully unorthodox! How do you even know you're running these services? And then to be sure they're working, when you don't even know what you're looking at? Depends on how big your network isto start off with, and to answer your question, start with a "Mastering Windows NT 4.0 Server" book, found at your local B&N bookstore.
