DNS Transfer

By kwame_x ·
Hey Guys:

I have DNS services running on a old server, we recently acquired a new server and I want to transfer the DNS over to the new server. Whats the best way to transfer the DNS over to the new server.

I'm assuming you're using win2k or win2k3 server. In that case the DNS is running on your DC. Turn off DNS service on the old server and configure it on the new server. Make sure to make the appropriate changes on statically configured clients and other servers and network devices (if needed). Another solution is to change the IP addresses of the old/new servers and then configure the DNS. This will avoid needing to change the rest of the network. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Site Replication

You say you have an old DNS server and have acquired a new server and want to transfer the data across, are these servers just standalone DNS servers or are they domain controllers.

If they both have been setup as domain controllers you can create a site for each (under Active Directory Sites and Services) and then force replication between them, when you have done that you then simply retire the old server.
