DNS with Remote Location DC

By claywilson ·
I have a remote location with a domain controller in it. I have setup two windows 2000 RRAS vpn routers, one in remote local and one in main local. I open DNS snapin in the main location and click on the server that is in the remote location and it says: "Cannot contact the DNS server" and this is the same message I get if I try the same thing from the server in the remote location. I cannot figure out how to get this working..I have tried everything. From the remote location I can connect via UNC path to the main locals domain controller. So I know the vpn connection is good and working fine. I just cannto figure out how to get the servers to see each other in the DNS snapin. Please help me, Im so frustrated.

I have tried all the dns setting stuff like dynamic updates and records etc..

so the remote DC is actually listed as a name server for the domain in DNS? AND that allow dynamic updates to servers listed on the name servers tab is checked?

a VPN connection into RRAS is just like being on a dedicated link or actually on the LAN so you should be able to browse the network BUT clients looking for a DC may be given the wrong IP address in which to connect to. See this microsoft article

Yes the server in the remote location is listed as a name server and yes Dynamic updates is also checked off.

I think maybe I should clarify something: The DC in the remote lacation is not the same machine that has RRAS on it. The remote location is like this: Internet-->Linksys Router-->RRAS Server-->DomainController. The main location looks like this: Intetrnet-->PIXFirewall-->RRAS Server-->DomainComtroller

The RRAS servers both have 2 nics; one going to the internet and one going to the internal LAN.

Hope that helps a bit.

DC - you mean W2K/W2K3 AD domain controlers? If so, how you set them up? Are they both part of the same zone in your DNS or you have a delegated zone in the remote site?
