Do I need earth strap, how can I make it

By jbarrett ·
I have a PC the fault of which I have been told may be down to grounding or bad earthing.I was instructed to make an earth strap. There isnt one with this system so could you please help me out in either making one or in relevant advice. Thanks.

Do I need earth strap, how can I make it

I am not sure how the electrical system works in the UK, but I seem to recall that your outlets do have a ground (earth) pin.

Things to check:

1. Is the wall socket wired correctly? Your local hardware store should have an inexpensive checkerfor sale.

2. Are you using anything other than a standard computer power cord between the wall and the computer? If the answer is yes, examine each of these things with a view towards whether or not it is passing the earth wire through it. (Example: In the U.S., a grounded cord is 3-wire, but you can buy a cheap 2-wire extension cord and an adaptor to let you use it. The problem is that eliminates the ground connection from the wall to the computer.) Check extension cords, power strips, and UPS boxes, using the tester mentioned above.

3. If the problem does not show up in the above, you can earth the box by taking any wire of at least the thickness of your power wires, and running it between the case of the box (put it under a screw), and a known-good earth wire.
WARNING -- if the earth connection in your electrical system was not good enough above, it is not good enough for this.

Line voltage is not a good area for trial-and-error. Be careful!

Hope this helps.

By earthing do they mean grounding yourself or the system. If you need additional grounding for the system just get a length of wire and attach one bare end to the system case (wrap around a case screw) and secure the other end to a ground (like themetal casing of your wall plug). Just be careful what you are connecting to. If you need to ground yourself (must have a really electrifying personality :) ) then contact your local computer workshop and they should be able to help you get a wrist strap or suggest an anti-static floor pad for yourself.

What kind of problem are you having that requires all the additional grounding?

Disclaimer:

*Be careful when you're dealing with electricity.*

Dealing with the AC power is a lot different than the 5V on a motherboard or 12V to a peripheral. The mains line can kill you, and electricity doesn't give a second chance.

Now, after the disclaimer, what is the earthing strap for? Most PCs around the world should already have some sort of third prong to deal with grounding the power when plugged into the AC outlet. The main connector to the motherboard also has grounds (the central black wires). Also the 12V plugs to the peripherals (again, the black wires). These should be standard. If someone has cut off the plug to your power supply and replaced it with a two prong variety (unusual for the UK unless you are using a shaving adapter), then you need to buy a new plug and rewire it (follow the guide printed on or inside the plug).

Most earth straps are made of a stranded copper or aluminum, weaved in a lattice-like fashion to make a strap. The ends are usually bolted directly to the frame of whatever two devices needing the voltage potential cancelled. However, this is not necessary in a home or business PC since all the relevant bits are generally bolted/attached to the one frame/tower/desktop.Again, if there *is* a grounding problem, then it is with a commercial part within the system (power supply, motherboard, or peripheral) and any other types of grounds are unnecessary (and possibly dangerous if miswired). You would be better off replacing the bad part.

Hope that helps,

You can forget the building of the earth strap and consider calling a technician to do some wiring installation to get a ground added to your wall socket. You are mostly likely using a surge protector and the wall socket does not have the ground socket.
This is common in a lot of buildings and it is not somethig that you can do unless you have electrician expierence to do rewire.

Thanks guys..we actually do have an earth at the wall socket etc. I took the advice of replacing the bad part. I came to the conclusion the motherboard was the problem and since replacing it everything has been fine.
