do I need WIN DNS or Just WINS

By lacayo ·
I have a Win2000 domain, I am having DNS problems and I think th atthe WIN- DNS in conflicting with my LINUX DNS server.

Do I have to have windows DNS to run on my network for windows machine to play nice with each other?

Thanks IN advance.

Luis

Microsoft recommendation is to have MS DNS servers. If that is not possible then you can run DNS on any OS (Unix, Linux) but they should be BIND 8.x compliant - ability to allow clients to update records dynamically.

If you satisfy this criteria, DNS need not run on W2K.

Simplest would be to have WINS and register you Domain controllers with 1C entries to allow all clients to connect to the DC for authentication upon logon(s).
