Do we really need antivirus?

I downloaded the Oreilly Annoyances chapter last night and want someone to explain to me how he gets away with stating "...getting a virus is a one in a million shot".

What is the context of that claim? Is the author trying at sarcasm or trying to explain AV nay sayers?

that the incident rate of attempts to infect is so great that even a small probability of success for any one attempt will generally result in near certainty of success for the sum total of attempts.
