Do you have to use AD in Win 2K network

By gary5500 ·
We are thinking about upgrading our servers to Win 2k server. Do we have to make use of Actve Directory on the PDC or can we implement that at a later date.

Do you have to use AD in Win 2K network

by Joseph Moore In reply to Do you have to use AD in ...

IF you upgrade your NT4 PDC to Win2k, then it will AUTOMATICALLY be upgraded to Active Directory. This is how it works.
You cannot NOT install AD on a NT4 PDC.

Also, do NOT install Win2K on a BDC BEFORE you do it to the PDC; this will be bad on a global scale! You can have Win2K servers be member servers in your NT4 domain (members servers that are NOT domain controllers).

The upgrade path is to install Win2k on the PDC first, which installs AD, then you can choose to upgrade the BDCs, or leave them. Yes, you can have NT4 BDCs with a Win2K DC (that was your previous NT4 PDC).

Good luck.

You can only use Win2K servers in a workgroup environment without Active Directory. If you are in a domain environment, you have to install AD on your domain controllers. You can, however, have Win2K server(s) in your NT domain as member servers, before actually upgrading the domain itself to Win2K, if you just want to get your feet wet with the basic Win2K UI.

In your case, if you want to maintain your current domain structure, you'd have to install Win2K on your PDC first, which will automatically install AD and migrate all your user and computer accounts, etc. Then, you'd upgrade any BDC's, and then any member servers. You can also choose to do a migration from one domain to another if you want to change anything about your domain structure (i.e., name of domain, different DNS structure, different user account structure, etc.) at the same time. In that case, you'd have to start with a new server as the first server in the AD domain, install Win2K, run dcpromo to create yourdomain, and then migrate accounts or create new accounts as you wish.

Hope this helps!
