Had some parts lying around so I started putting together a new system. Got everthing essential installed (no modem, sound) installed windows 95 without error. Then I stuck in my modem and sound card things installed fine. Then I wanted to install software; immediate problems. Rebooting didn’t fix and it got worse. Reinstalled windows new folder. Ran scandisk without error. Back to install software and more problems. Now I removed sound and modem and tried to use power supply from other system and found I couldn’t. I then plugged things back in (no modem, sound)and fired up. I heard a snap and smoke was bellowing out from harddrive area. I checked connections and tried again and still smoke, emm smells yummy. Frustrated, I gave up. Next day disconnected hard drive and system booted (from floppy). I plugged in hard drive and it no longer is functioning(not spinning).
My question is; is it possible for the power supply to malfunction and attack one system component (hard drive).
I had a hard drive previous to this that may have suffered the same fate in this system, but not sure about that.
Any Ideas what may have happened here? The only thing I can think of is the power supply but why aren’t other things getting fried?
