Dear Technical geniuses,
I work for a company that is at that difficult stage whereby we are not quite big enough to afford an IT dept. but have enough technical need to go beyond a few clients and a simple server.
The problem i am currently looking at is a document server problem. Like most companies, the amount of paper files we keep are vast, and over the last 12 months we have switched from paper to electronic storage.
There are two sites and at present everything is being scanned to the main server. The problem is that for the local site this is fine, but access speeds for the other site are slow and thus affecting productivity. Also having the same physical server coping with being an exchange, domain and document server I’m sure is causing bottleneck problems.
At the moment we are also using the server to hold the database for the main front of house application. However, this is soon to change with an upgrade to SQL Server technology. Therefore there is a good opportunity to try and move the document server function elsewhere and retire the current one to just running exchange and Actrive Directory activities.
Therefore I’m thinking I want a solution whereby I have a machine at each site that hold all the documents, and that replicate each other. Then, at each site the local clients will obtain any documents it requires from the local server (perhaps a group policy function). I believe that this must be possible, I also imagine that the hardware would not have to be too sophisticated, and I probably do not even need a server based operating system on the document servers ???
All clients are on XP and current server is 2000.
I would really appreciate someone who can point me in the right direction, or to some good source material.
Thanks alot
Matt
