Does Allow Fast Saves hurt PowerPoint

By anejako ·
Dear All:

I am wondering if the problem one of my users is having with her PowerPoint presentation is due to the Allow Fast Saves option being turned on in PowerPoint.

She is using a Gateway E-3110 computer with a 7.85 GB hard drive, 128 MB RAM. She doesn't often have PowerPoint problems, but the fact that this presentation contains a lot of notes makes the mystery more interesting.

She saved her presentation at the end of the day one day, and then tried to open it at a later date. She saw the error message "PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by (filename)." Nothing we could do could recover the corrupted file--couldn't show it, couldn't quick view it.

Is Allow Fast Saves at fault here? Is it something else? I just want to make sure it doesn't happen again--I have already disabled it in the user's version of PowerPoint.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

I'm guessing it's not Fast Saves, although I don't personally like that option--it operates like mini-source control in that it appends revisions to the end of the existing file rather than rewriting the entire file. It used to be problematic when it first came out; I haven't used it since so I don't know if it's improved.

HOWEVER. Your mention of "a lot of notes" seems to be ringing a vague bell--check the KB at MS for PP and "saving from notes views". I have the notion that that's a badidea and can lead to corrupted, unrecoverable presentations.

This is the best answer to this mystery. Hopefully Notes are not a problem in PowerPoint 2000.

Thanks for your help!
