Does anyone here have knowledge about property management programs .....

By Dusterman ·
Specifically ............RealPage ?
.
Was brought into a new client [ refered by the new head of operations ] ....... a large rental property management company out of another state
.
Seems they walked in and fired everyone, of coarse all of the passwords were gone , PITA ... but not the end of the world .... usually.
.
We have encountered only one program that will not " play well " with us .
.
The software company is not much help, reads from the manual [ which I got on-line and printed and used before calling ] .
.
Since we only installed an anti-virus [ they cliam that AVG is an approved vendor ] and cleaned the machines [ took a very long time - 38k items ! ! - as the anit-virus that was installed had not been updated since 2005 ! ! ] they nor us can finger this one out .
.
I personally went there and re-set all settings we changed and killed all anti-virus processes ...... still no go.
.
Oh ..... yea ....... they cliamed that IE7 was the problem as well ..... soooooooo .... you guessed it....... back to IE6 ....... still fobar ......... I am back on Monday and will take my old Windows 2000 [travel] laptop and try it as well ....... me thinks the old employees were given just enough notice to make things sour and we've had other issues .,...but this one is the biggest as it is their finacial and background checking program.
.
Oh yea ......... here's the best part we inherited this program and it's license and costs....yes they gave us new passwords .... no support though !!
.
Support for their program costs by four hour blocks....... upper management is finding us new vendors soon ....... I hope .
.
Can you imagine loosing a large customer just because ..............
.
Oh well , when we're gone someone at that company will be getting laid-off and whining to their significant other ........ I don't understand ...........
.
Sorry ......... rant was just needed to show my frustration with this company .
.
Thanks for any input.
.
Mike

I say you have your hands full there.

What format are the docs in?
From what i read they can be in any format.
Do not like it myself, especially paying in four hour blocks for support. Try and transfer everything over to excel i say, but then you have to decipher the documents first to do that.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

Well ..........

by Dusterman In reply to I say you have your hands ...

The bottom linecomes down to the software company that was forced to allow the transfer of the program rights ....
.
but has decided [ with the old management company giving them a little nudge ] that all the old info still belongs to the old company.
.
We can beat them in court ....... but in the mean time they do not have a clue as to where the books stand, the actual rents stand ......ect.
.
Our attorney's have a call in and expect it to be resolved by Tuesday .
.
What a crock ! !
.
Sorry to be such a whiner here ...just thought someone may have a better answer than just wait for the attorney's to flex a little legal muscle :-)

Not much else that it is possible to do here

by OH Smeg In reply to Well ..........

This really isn't a Technical Problem or a Legal Problem more a Personal Problem and those are the Hard Ones to deal with.

It all boils down to Personalities and miffed people who will not do anything to help or actively work against you. A good reason not to become involved in any Hostile Takeovers as things always go badly for those put in to fix what has gone before. Quite often these people undeservedly get a bad reputation for not being able to fix the mess that they are landed with and this makes life harder for them as they are in a No Win Position.

Make sure you get this in writing..

"But has decided [ with the old management company giving them a little nudge ] that all the old info still belongs to the old company".

That way you are not liable for any costs. Why take on this (stupid) software in the first place. Normally people use either Windows software that (nearly all) can relate to or openoffice software , well the format at least. Oh well such as life. Now i know why you are p####d off.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

Open Office ......yes

by Dusterman In reply to Make sure you get this in ...

We "gift" a few older systems and I personally install Open Office on each and every one of them !
.
Once got into an arguement with a college professor ........ when he finally closed his mouth and opened his mind ...... he became a convert as well :-)
.
Thanks for the idea's folks.
.
Today will be a hard day , as I have asked the new company to pay for a license so that I can access any of their systems.
.
Seems that the one id and password given me is and was in constant use in one of the property's.
.
Although the software company claims there is no conflict, we tried to log on to a known good alternate location and it was a no go .
.
So since I have gotten to this point ..... being the uneducated moron that I am [ according to their it person ]............. I will assume [ bad Mike .... bad Mike ] that I may have finally come up with the answer ......... I hope :-)
.
AS always ............
.
Keep on ..........
.
Keepin on .....................
.
and
.
be safe out there :-)

Well as Management created this mess I'm assuming

by OH Smeg In reply to Does anyone here have kno ...

That they are willing to pay to fix it up. I've just had a look at the Site of the Application maker and my first reaction was YUK!

As you don't know how this was even being used it's going to be very hard to fix the mess that you have inherited if it as at all possible. The real problem here isn't so much how the software works but how it was being used which is the real issue here. I would be looking at stating from Scratch and filling in whatever software solution Management lands upon from the very beginning. But knowing how these type of places work you are likely to find yourself given the boot because you haven't got it working properly and someone else being brought in to fix up what the management stuffed up in the first place. Of course when the replacement can do no better than you the same thing will happen to them and so on till the place either goes broke or the People in charge realize that they made a mistake. Personally from past experience I think the place will be broke long before the People who made the mess even begin to consider that just maybe they did something wrong. They will just blame Incompetent Staff who have done everything within their power to prevent Management getting their own way.

I wish you luck because you are going to need it.
