Data mining is a general term covering the statistical analysis of data to identify trends and/or relationships. It held great promise a few years ago, but may have been over sold.
Here's a location for some case studies:

Data mining is an area of analytical processing used to identify potentially significant relationships in data without any prior dirctions or hints. Its useful to find unexpected patterns but the results must be confirmed by directed analysis. Because of this, ROI can be hard to track.
Try http://www.dw-institute.com and http://www.dama.org/ for education and research in data management, data warehousing etc. I know that TDWI has many case studies for all aspects of analytical information processing.
