I have a similar problem whereby my laptop is in a workgroup and I connect to an exchange server on our domain. My local and domain usernames are the same (DOH!!) and I have major problems with my domain account getting locked out. To workaround the problem I edited the properties of my mail profile in outlook (right click off the outlook shortcut and choose to edit an existing profile). From the Exchange server settings pane, select the advanced tab and change the logon security to none - this will cause outlook to always prompt for credentials rather than attempting an initial login using your logged on username and password. This way you get to specify the correct domain for the login and avoid the lockouts. Hope this helps....
