DOMAIN CONFUSION

By Link Cornelius ·
Heres what happened. I have a domain with the PDC and multiple BDC's. Someone took a BDC and moved it to a new domain. I had to bring it back to the original domain. Now the BDC thinks it is in the 2nd domain not the one that it is supposed to be moved back into. NBTSTAT shows the domain that I don't want. I can't log in because it is a DC and it won't validate me. But users can browse to it and use it. I tried to re create the secure channel between the PDC and BDC. Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you go to server manager and add the BDC back into the domain then restart the BDC and try to login to the domain? You could also unplug it from your network and try to log into the computer locally. A last option might be to look at the registry settings for that computer through another servers registry. Be careful though it can get tricky in the registry because both computers registries are open.

First of all how did they move the BDC to another domain? Did they reload it and configure it as a PDC or BDC of the new domain? Not sure how this was accomplished. I need more info to answer this correctly. The simple fact is that if it was moved to another domain without being reloaded, I am not sure how that was accomplished. But if you are saying it happened I would like to know how. To my knowledge once an NT server is loaded as a PDC or BDC there is no other way to change it unless you promote it or demote it. However once a DC of one domain it is part of that domain forever.

Did the person keep it as a BDC when they moved it to the other domain? Is it set to the old domain now?

Delete the BDC's account from the domain using Server Manager on your PDC or one of your other BDCs.

Log onto the BDC locally (hopefully you remember the administrator's password).

Go to network properties, move the BDC to a workgroup then move it back into the domain. Make it it is added back as a BDC.
