    Domain Controlled Network

    Locked

    by makumbi ·

I have built up a simple network with a domain controller running windows 2000 server and three (3) client machines running 2000 professional.
What I don’t understand is why one of these machines can log onto the DC while it’s not turned on?
Can someone give me an explanation to this?

Check to ensure that you do not have offline files enabled. Also if the passwords are the same you may actually be login in locally.

There is a security setting in the Local Computer Security Policy that allows the caching of X number of previous logons in case the DC is not accessible. The default is set to 10.

The users are not actually logging on the the non-operating DC as much as they are using previously authenticated domain account credentials to log on to their computer (rather than using local computer accounts).

This feature primarily allows mobile users to use the same user profile whether they are connected to the domain or not.
