domain controller gone

By phatrat_uk ·
Hi im appealing for help with a problem we have,

The we have a 2 domain controllers on our network running windows 2000 server. These have active directory on them for the computer accounts etc. The server is the main domain controller has died so now nobody can log on to the network, the other server says the user accounts are still held in active directory. Unfortunatly the backups havent been working and thats what i was fixing when the disk in the main DC died so ive had to install a fresh copy of 2 k server on this machine. Is there a way i can get back to how was without starting again.

do you have your backup tapes/DVD/CDs/ backup media?

Did you do a full system backup anytime recently? just do a restore from the backup, apply any current incremental backups to the latest dates.

You mentioned that you have two domain controller. Win2k server serves themselves... I mean if the DC is offline.. the other server will be promoted.I hope the synchronization between servers has been configured properly and working before the DC Now go to the other server promote it and if it is a member of active directory .. it will just recreate the sids for users. I hope that you didn't make nor promoted the newly restored server but if you did it is most likely that active directory has changed.

Back up won't work unless you have a repair disk with you .

You need to seize the FSMO roles. This articles explains how-

Thanks this was spot on, i seized the roles and did a metadata cleanup to remove the old DC. Everything is fine now and the old DC is back online.

Thanks again

Hey Sharon, #3, your answer is spot-on. You beat me to the punch.

Phil, From the limited information you have provided, it seems like you have Win9x and/or Win NT4 workstations. Each of these require a specific domain controller to logon to the network. One of the FSMO's is PDC Emmulator. (sp). All down-level clients must logon to this system. Because your first DC has died, it was the PDC emulator. You will need to follow the link in answer #3, which will give the instructions to move the PDC Emulator to the second domain controller.

Best of luck

Michael R.
