Domain Controller not found

By tkuo ·
We have DNS and WINS on headquarter and one BDC (also run DHCP and Exchange 5.5) on each remote office. One remote office have the problem of "Domain Controller not found" when users (WIN95B or C) tried to change their passwords.

All servers are NT4.0 with SP5. I can see all other servers from that BDC. I suspect it maybe name resolution issue but I don't know where to start troubleshooting. Thanks for help.

Tony

When you say you can see all other servers, you mean you can ping them? or what?

Name resolution, try pinging the name of the PC, that will tell you if the machine is resolving names, and WINS manager can help to identify if one of the machines did not register with the PDC.

How about the Event Log>? Any error messages there? Try looking at the BDC and PDC? Let me know some more details of what you have done already.

Make sure the 9X machines are set to "Log on to an NT Domain" with the proper name specified in the Network Properties.

Tony:

I am not sure if you are doing this on a network or over RAS and what protocols you are using. Assuming on the network, read TechNet articles Q193105, Q154434 and Q168747. One talks about a race logon and a work around. Another talks about an Out of Band issue, and lastly referring to the TCP/
IP not bound correctly to the redirector.

If you don't have Technet, check out the MS website http://www.microsoft.com/technet/. It is a searchable website using these article numbers.

Good luck,

Mike

After applying WIN95WS2SETUP.EXE (Windows Socket 2 update) on client PC, it is fixed now. Thanks for your help.

most probably, the remote machines cannot get to the wins server because they can't resolve it's Netbios name. Add the wins server to the hosts file on the remote machines.

I try not to use HOSTS and LMHOST files. That's my last resolve.
