Domain controller

By alsolaih ·
Dear all;

I've a question regarding a new server acting as a domain controller , which specifications are suitable for that (no. of users about 100 - 150, will install DNS service on it, and maybe DHCP, won't store any data on it)

any help

Well if you you want here

Is some limited addressing and a Host for AD and GP's there doesn't need to be much power at all involved.

Most basic desktop systems would be powerful enough to do all that you have asked for here but I can not see any point in adding a DC with such limited use as it's just increasing your costs in M$ Licensing with no real use otherwise.

But the more that you want this server to do like hosting Exchange and so on or things like ISA the more power it requires. So what exactly do you want this server to do and that will determine the hardware that is required?

Thank you for reply

actually I want to install in this server windows 2008 server and Active directory, DNS, and maybe DHCP. that's all, nothing more.
also i want to make an additional server as a backup DC (additional domain controller.
For Exchange I'll use a separate server.

I've this server specifications:

Processor Family: Intel Xeon Quad E5520 (2.26 GHz)
Memory 4 GB
Network Controller: Two 1 GBE NC382i Multifunction 2 Ports
Hard Drive: 2*146 GB SAS Hot Plug 2.5
DVD RW
460 Watt hot plug
Rack (2U)

Only thing I would change here for a Exchange Server

Is to use bigger HDD's as 146 GIG is a bit small, everything else is perfectly OK for the stated goals.
