I was called in on a problem that I can't seem to resolve. An administrator on an NT 4 Domain with 1 PDC and 1 BDC network running WINS (neither configure for push or pull) decided to ad 2 additional BDC's to the network of approximately 100 users. He aslo made these BDCs WINS servers. He synchronized the domain. After doing so users can no longer logon unless they are members of the Adminstrators group. The PDCs and BDCs are getting confused as to which one is which. There is no backup and RDISK has not been performed. Any suggestions short of a total reinstall.

The only way PDC's and BDC's would get confused on who is who, is related to the 16th Octet in the Netbios name, or one of the systems thinks its a PDC or WINS has stale records. You can eliminate the additional WINS into the by stopping the WINS server on the systems that were not originaly part of the fray. I sent you an email if you want to provide some additional information like the evt logs, a capture of the Wins database, etc. If you need help with the capture of these records, let me know. I would also add that if you remove the BDC's that were created from the mix by turning them off, we can eliminate them also and focus on restoring the original configuraton. Once thats done, we can figure out what went wrong and restore it withthe new BDC's if needed. Check your email
