Domain Migration

By jlbpotter ·
I am currently running a Windows NT Server domain with Exchange 5.5 running on one of my BDCs. I plan on upgrading my NT PDC to 2000 AD and leave my Exchange 5.5 on the NT based BDC for about 2 months before migrating it to Windows 2K with Exchange 2000. Does anyone see any potential pitfalls that I could have with this scenario. Thanks in advance.

This is exactly what we did in our 2000 upgrade. We had a PDC that did nothing but be a domain controller and a BDC that ran exchange 5.5. After upgrading to 2000 on the PDC we had no difficulties at all.

Be warned that upgrading Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 can be tricky in a mixed mode domain. We are still having problems with some of our security and distribution groups due to name conflicts.

Still that is a problem for another day. With regards to this work, go for it. We did what you describe and have never looked back.

Our exchange system carried on working just as it should. Exchange 5.5 knows nothing about AD and the PDC you upgrade to a domain controller should be set to emulate an NT PDC role. This means that Exchange 5.5 won't think that anything has changed.

Thank you for your comment. Is there anything troubling I need to watch out for when I make Exchage 5.5 communicate with W2K Active Directory.
