domain users cannot open files directly

When a domain user tries to open a file directly it fails to open.However if they use the application the file is associated with it opens without any problem.

Definitely sounds like a file association problem.

Is it always the same file or same file type?
Is the application involved a standard Windows application?
Does this apply to all users or only aspecific one?

If you are running Win2K/XP on the problem computers, in Windows Explorer, go to the Tools menu | Folder Options and choose the File Types tab. Search for the file type you are having problems with and make sure it has been associated with the correct application (or is even listed).
