    Domain Users Can’t Log on some stations

    Locked

    by whatme? ·

    I have a domain with 1 PDC and BDC, 24 workstations. some users cannot log onto some workstions. My server manager sees the stations as members of the domain. I have gone to these same 8 stations and checked user rights. I can copy a profile to thatstation but then the user only logs in locally rather than roaming. I can’t change the profile back to roaming. Can anyone make any sense of this.

      Is the problem on certain WORKSTATIONS or with certain USERS? If it is with certain workstations, odds are pretty good it is a minor network setup problem. Removing and reinstalling the network settings should fix that.

      If it is a problem with certain users, check their parameters and ensure they are receiving their user profiles. If all else fails, delete the user and recreate their rights.

      Good luck,

      Well, you need to determine whether the source of the problem is the WORKSTATION or the USER.

      There is a simple test which can tell you that:

      – IF the user can login to another workstation then it is not a user problem

      – Try to login to thesame workstation using another user id and if this succeeds then it is a permissions problem so do the follwing:

      * Go to the user manager for the workstation
      * Go to Policies
      * Select User Rights
      * There is a right to “access this computer from the network”, make sure that the users who are facing the problem are granted this right.

      Hope this helps you,

        I had already done that. I gave the so many rights I now have to go back and find out what I actually gave them.

      You seem to have lost or have corrupt security identifiers (SID) for your the user accounts in the DOMAIN. Your roaming profile accounts on the PDC might hav SID’s that do not correspond with the PDC’s Security Account Manager.

      If this is your actual problem, you will need to do the following;
      – Recreate one of the affected user accounts.
      – Create a roaming profile path for that account, using the user manager for domains
      – logon from any of the affected workstations using that account.- Check if the profile status shows roaming.
      – If this works then you might have to do the same for the remaining accounts.

      If this fails could you check your event viewer on the PDC, BDC, and affected Workstations, and print from each respective computer. Check red alerts and mail them over.

        Actually, this is what happened. My PDC went down and the BDC failed to log them on. When I recreated the PDC, yhey came back online but ALL user accounts were useless. I deleted all and started again. 400 some users… a real pain.
