i was victim of poor computer setup

Your article reminded me of my reason for leaving my old company. We had just 5 pcs with win98se ,ppl using it for stock and trading database, and one novell 4.2 server.Main database used to reside in server and a copy scattered all over 5 pcs!All machines including server was infected with klez virus!Server was backed by a ups giving 5mnt standby power which used to get tripped as soon as power goes off.Modem was connected to one client m/c for internet but no updation of antivirus!I was the only eng who was supposed to take care of all machines with all other major resposibilities.
I could never felt like doing anything for this small network.Because I was made certain that this is not my major work and it did not matter how disgruntled the setup was!Suddenly one day, a mail came from headoffice asking me to make all machines virusfree within few days as it was required to upload database to a hired isp server!
I put in a lot of time and had to beg for the free time and free machines to do my work.I did my best to clear all viruses from desktop machines.I even trained all colleagues. But when it came to server,I was told that they could not buy any antivirus software for novell4.2!
I decided to resign…I was very upset by theattitude of this company towards security and proper design…People there still waste time in rebooting, sending data in floppies…trying to connect modem to some poor machine….

Most of these problems are pretty much easy to find and correct. So besides collecting money for nothing what in the world were the IT people doing? IMHO-unless the IT people documented the companies refusals to follow correction actions I say they are still somewhat if not entirely responsible for this mess.

        downsized the wrong IT people

Seems like the accountants decided which of the IT people to downsize, yea, all the expensive, experienced knowledgeable ones. I have absolutely no sympathy for alleged leadership making stupid decision such as this.

Who gets left with the bad reputation? The IT people who were left, who were probably out of their depth. Should have kept the more experienced ones. I’ve got better security in my house network.
