don't display ANY username

By NetWill ·
Got a new win98 box. No matter what username I use to logon, it ALWAYS shows "Log off 'Default'" on the start menu. If I restart the computer, it defaults the username to "Default" EVERYTIME. It seems like it is NOT retaining the username of last logon.

any ideas on how to make it to retain last username?

Go to control panel and try changing the password, and see if this works.
If you are familiar with the CMOS panel it may be an option in there that will change the password to enable.

There is a registry key that determines which user is displayed in the Login screen. I don't happen to know where it is, though, so try www.microsoft.com/technet.

Also, make sure the user profiles are enabled. That is handled in the USER section of the Control Panel.

Hope this helps!

First I might ask are you signing onto a network? Or is this just a stand alone machine? First you might consider deleting the pwl files and also removing the users from the machine. But if you want to be able to log on each time the machine boots, but dislike the annoying default username in the the logon box the location for clearing that box is found at the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> WinLogin

Once there add thekey.
ValueName: DontDisplayLastUserName
DataType: REG_DWORD
VALUE: 1

Hope this helps.

The best solution to these problems is to use xteq utilities. They will enable you to retain any login name or password, autolog you in and even remove the nagging "Logoff <user>" from the Start menu, without having to edit the registry yourself (itdoes it for you).

You can find this utility (it's free BTW) here:

http://www.xteq.com/

There are also heaps of additional plug-ins you can add to totally personalise your system.
