don't understand dos

By dawn_haynes ·
I am trying to reinstall windows 98 on a friend's computer that crashed. I can't get dos to reconize the cd rom. For some reason dos won't work on any commands except dir. I have several drivers including cdgod55 but when I type install.exe at either the a or c promt all I get is bad command. I even bought a new drive with a driver that will boot in dos but that won't work either. Please help this is driving me crazy. Thanks Dawn.

YOu need to have a Windows 98 boot disk to reinstall the operating system. if you are able to create a startup disk from an existing Win98 machine then it will work fine. However if you do not have access to another Win98 system then you can download the startup disk from www.bootdisk.com

After you have a Win98 bootdisk you can reload the operating system with ease

To get the CD-ROM recognized please do the following steps.

1. Get the CD-Rom driver on the computer(Of-course through a floppy.)
2. After installing the driver, you have to place the driver path in the autoexec.bat file on your computer

OR create a BATCH FILE with the following text:- C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /V /M:8
save it and run it.

NOTE: (c) over here should be the main drive.
you can change if the cd-rom drive is different.

If installing the drivers from floppy use
A:/SET UP .EXE
Using the CD rom type the drive letter of the cd rom in the same manner as above.
ex:/set up .exe
To laod the operating system, insert the boot disk in drive A and the CD rom in driveyou will be prompted with screen how to install, select the option to install with cd-rom support.

It may be even easier than that if you have a new enough motherboard, hit delete during bootup (depending on the mobo that you have, may have to hit F2 or esc.) get into the BIOS and try to change the boot up sequence from A,C to CDROM,A or anythingthat looks to the CDROM first,, no worries about CDROM drivers or DOS recognizing or anything,, all automatic for the people that way..
Hope that helps simplify your life.
