dos application

By SimY ·
I have a dos application which runs in full screen on WinXP. Once or twice a day, the screen will automatically go black and when the display reappears after a second, the application is running in a window. There are no apparent problems with the application itself as I can return it to full screen and continue working.

It doesn't occur at any particular time of day, nor are there any interruptions from other applications that I can see (e.g. outlook, antivirus). Also, nothing listed in the event logs relating to this. I have a NVIDIA Riva TNT2 vide card and 17" diamond view monitor. Look forward to your suggestions. Thanks.

Welllll, are you wanting it to stop? If so here are my suggestions, try looking in to startup files and such first, try to look in msconfig startup and such see if its there, also, ctrl+alt+del, 3 key ordeal, and see if you see it running there, if so, goto search and type it all out including the extention, when its up, "if at all" click the secondary mouse button over it and select "open containing folder" and see what you can find. All the best, good luck

I'm trying to stop the application changing from running in full screen to a window, not the application itself. Thanks Anyway

that is a weird one. (your problem, not the previous answer (rdl!)
what do you think about power saving kicking in or something? have you tried disabling suspend mode and video off mode and screensavers and all that? BIOS and windows control panel?
if i had another monitor around i would probably stick it there if easy. maybe if would change my display to svga for a test also...just trying to affect the problem somehow to gather info...
out of curiosity i might tinker with the default dos windows settings. see if i change them, can i affect how the window 'comes back'...just idle curiosity fishing for data on what is happening...

Changed to 16 bit color and have had no recurrences. Your suggestion was close enough for me. Thanks. And thanks to everyone else.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't really help. See comment for answer #2 re default settings.

screensaver and power settings were disabled. default settings seemed OK - when the problem occurs the setting changes from full screen to run in window, but reverts back the next time the program is run. Will try another monitor when one is available. You're right - this is weird. Thanks sgt shultz.

To Ghoztalarm, when I said see answer #2 I meant see the comment above this one (which refers to answer #2). Sorry for the confusion.

If you haven't created an windows shortcut to the program file do it not.

Get properties on the shortcut and click on the memory tab. Try setting the protected check boxe in the conventional memory window.
