DOS based program shuts down automatic

By rogerps1 ·
I am using a DOS based financial package that has worked in XP Pro or Home without any problems. Now after having a problem with a virus which kept coming back and only after switching off the restore has now disappeared, the DOS based program switches off automatically. I double-click on the icon and within seconds it is off again. I tried to reboot and then start up the DOS based program. It came on and after about 2 minutes went off again. When trying to restart the program again it shuts itself down within seconds. HELP!!! The virus name was not given by AVG. It only says:"Warning: Hidden extensions" Hope some of this helps.

Assume you are not getting any error messges from the DOS app when it quits. If so, need to post them.

Sounds like a supporting file to the main executable file may be damaged or missing. Since it is a DOS app, you can copy all the program files into its directory from a good installation or install it on another computer and then copy files needed from clean install.

There won't be any registry entries or supporting files spread out over several folders like a Windows app.

Go out to a command prompt in Windows XP and change directories to where the DOS app is located.

Then try and run the DOS app.

To get a command prompt in XP go to Start Run and type in CMD

if the CMD window opens and closes by itself, then you may still be infected with a virus or Adware program stopping the window from opening.

I have also seen popup blocker programs that can close any window that opens.
