Dos in windows 2000

By kdurichek ·
Is there a way to boot to a dos prompt in windows 2000? I have a system that crapped out booting up (blue screen). I wouldn't worry so much but recovery console was not on his system to recover files or rename them. I may have deeper problems thoughbecause I figured quick fix to try a fast repair. Got to the point where it says "starting windows 2000" and it just hung there for about 10 minutes before I just cut it off. So I could go home for day. Had a burned out software teacher in school and didn't learn some stuff I probably should have. Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Allen

You can hold down F8 while the machine boots up and get a choice of startup modes. You probably won't need it, but you could also look at:

Reinstall Win2k - itll be the quickest (and prob. safest). THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DOS IN WIN2K!!! THE DOS IS A VDM - IT IS NOT ACTUALLY INSTALLED, AND THE DOS DISKS YOU MAY HAVE WILL NOT DETECT AN NTFS PARTITION!!

Drive is shot by test I have run and what Dell made do. I ended up downloading NTFSDOS shareware. Booting to the disk. Then loading dos network driver. Then my system admin gave me a batch file to run in dos to log into network. Then I just copied the guys stuff to network drive. Worked fine.

It is true that there no longer is a DOS prompt in Win2K.
You can only run the cmd prompt in windows, which as we all know is not true DOS.

What about boot disks? Have any?

There is no DOS anymore in Win2k. If you dont have boot disks then your screwed. You may be able to rerun setup and choose a repair option. Otherwise its reinstall time.
