DOS loading Problem under WinXP Pro

I have Gateway 500S and it has been running very well until couple days ago. I am not able to run any DOS programs, ipconfig.exe, msconfig.exe. Each of the problem program will come up, but will shutdown and go back to Windows Desktop screen.
I am able to run all the problems programs under safe mode.

What is the best solution to this problem.
