Windows XP is not 100% dos compatible. There is no reboot to msdos mode, depending upon how xp was put on the computer - that is upgrade or non-upgrade - you may not have the dos prompt at all.

You could try to do the start/run "command" and thenclick ok - or start/run "CMD" and see if you get anything.

Else you may want to get partion magic and isntall an older OS like windows 98 and then boot to 98 and then reboot to msdos mode...but...

Also if the computer came with XP then most likely it will not be Dos compatible at all since the new XP models don't have DOS drivers at all and they won't even have windows 98 drivers for video and the like. So you area really out of luck.

One final thing would be to make a dos start up disk on a win98 comptuer and then see if the generic cdrom drivers work but then most likely your sound would not work.

If this is for any old dos games that you have. It truely time to get rid of anything dos now.

The computer did come with win XP. If you could tell me how to create a DOS start up disk, that would be great because I can't figure it out. All I get are windows boot disks. The OSes I have available are winME, win95, winNT, and (of course) winXP.

Right now, if I use XP to create a DOS startup disk, I cannot access my HD or my CD-ROM drive.

Yes it is for an old DOS game. But my brother is practically obsessed with the game and it's his computer so I want to get it to work for him.

go to http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/bootdisk.htm

they have a boot disk for fat32 that may work if you have NTFS then you will need to go through their links - I found one once. I just don't remember where.

It didn't actually solve the problem. But I never actually tried it either. Please comment on my question about dual booting. It is in Support Republic|Other. :)
