DOS Printing Delay in XP

By dj61 ·
I work for a Hospital that uses an old DOS based scheduling program. It runs off a Novell server and uses Novell printing services to provide printing. Our Win2k and earlier machines are not having a problem. Our new XP machines take 5-10 minutes to print schedules. Win95 does it in about 15 seconds. I have checked all the settings related to the program, and everything is ok in regards to the program. I have tried launching it using Command.com instead of CMD.EXE. I have tried editing various files for time out print settings. I have updated the Novell client. XP has all updates, except SP2.

This sounded like a pretty good shot, but alas, nothing has changed.

Does it print faster if you exit/close the DOS program after sending the print job? If so, this should do the trick. It says for Win95/98, but I've used it to correct the problem on XP

Try changing the Printer settings so that it prints immediately rather than wait for spool to finish and then print it.

After much searching and many suggestions, most of which were frequently something that someone else had said try, I have decided there is not a fix for this. The Hospital will be replacing this scheduling software soon anyway in favor of something written in this century.
