Dos printing issues

By Greg Hauser ·
We are having difficulty printing properly from a dos application to our dot matrix printer. We can print fine for the first document but when we have multiple users attempting to print documents these documents become out synch and do not paginateproperly. All documents originate from a Dos program go into a Novell print queue attach to a printer attach to a print server. We are using NW4.2 recently upgraded from NW3.12 in which the same problem existed.

Can someone offer some suggestions? Thank you..

Are you running the workstations under Windows 9x? Set the printer driver on the local machine to print after spooling the last page, instead of the first page. If that doesn't work, then your DOS program is printing each page as a separate print job, and there is no easy way to repair the problem.

If you are under DOS only, your problem is much simpler, even if harder to repair. You will need to get a program that can spool your print jobs for you, then send it as one longer print job. I haven't seen one in years, but I know if you look hard enough, it can be found.

Good luck!

You should be able to insert a text file straight into the print queue using PCONSOLE. If you add multiple jobs, do they still come out out of sync? You might need to add a formfeed to the print job configuration, or capture setting.
You say thatthe printer is attached to a print server, which I assume you mean a dedicated solution, similar to an HP JetDirect print server, as opposed to a workstation running Pserver?
You don't say what network client you are using (Ms or Novell), but both of them have a config page where you can choose to add a form feed after each printjob. Personally, as this is a DOS app, I would create a job configuration, and use that specific setting for the app.
email if you want this clarified

Again I see I did not provide enough info. Yes we do have capture statements at the login that moves the print job into the queue. When viewed the print job as goes into the queue and then when it is received by the printer and then printed. It works fine one job at a time but not when multiple clients send jobs to the same printer.

If you are still tackling this problem, perhaps you should consider calling your local super-hero.
