DOS problems in Windows XP

By exp_hhooven ·
I am having a slight issue with anything DOS in Windows XP. The company I work for supports an old 16-bit dos-based application for some clients that are still on it. Recently, one of these clients has encountered an error with Windows XP where all dos applications exit out after just a few seconds. There are no error messages and the dos window stays open, but any application I open that is dos based shuts down.

As an example, I can open notepad from dos, and since it is a windows application, it stays open. However, if I use the Edit command (whether I use a filename or just open a blank document with it) it will shut down after several seconds.

Does anyone know what the heck is going on? I can't seem to find anything that sounds like the problem I am having anywhere.

Check/Compare the \windows\system32\"autoexec.nt" and "config.nt" files with others from a working workstation.
Every time you will start a DOS app these files will be used (automaticaly) to initiate the DOS enviroment.
