bios/dos/console scrambled (strange unrelated ASCII characters); however Windows is fine. Only thing that is different is that my fan on the power supply has slowly gone out.

did you upgrade your bios???….try…i think that your problem is in the motherboard…it looks like a video failure…you can start upgrading the bios and if the problem persists try changing the video card…

Hi ChanceBoy, If your fan on the power supply is not turning, and you do not any other case cooling fans, your power supply is overheating, and can cause your output voltages not to be in the correct range.
Either change out the power supply, which I suggest you do, since it has overheated, or buy two case fans. One for the front of the case to draw in air from the bottom of the case, and one on the power supply vents to blow the cool air through the power supply and exhaust at the back of the power supply, keeping the power supply as cool as possible.
Good luck and have a great day.

If Windows is working then I would try to
boot with a boot disk.I would replace the fan
in the power supply and see what happens.
If your ps is kaput, then windows would not
work. The other possibility is that your
cmos is corrupted, but not sobadly that it
would prevent windows from working. You could
try clearing your cmos to see what happens. There is a possibility that your video board has a problem.Good luck

A different take on this problem – it could be the monitor (this happened to my system a while ago). Do you have access to another working system? Try swapping monitors and see if the “known good” one works in DOS. If it does, buy yourself a replacement monitor!
And do replace that overheated power supply.
