Double Icons on W2KPro Desktop!?

By blackwolf ·
I have a user with Win2K Pro. The users account is set up as the administrator account and deleted all the other account folders (All Users, Default User, etc.). Now every time the user tries to create a new shortcut or an app creates a shortcut on the Desktop, the user gets TWO shortcuts on the desktop. The system shortcuts (My Computer, My Documents, Recycle Bin, etc.) are not affected. Trying to delete one, deletes the other. When browsing down the folder tree into C:\Documents and settings\Aministrator\Desktop, only one shortcuct is visible. Manually recreating the other two default account folders (All Users & Default User) does not fix the problem nor does putting the shortcut into one of these folders under desktop (It doesn't evenput the shortcut on the desktop). I feel that this is probably a registry problem, but I can't find anything wrong there either. So, why is Win2K creating two identical shortcuts on the desktop?

I would backup users profile and then remove all user profiles from system properties (My Computer". Have the profile recreated and take it from there.

Sorry.. didn't work. I wound up having to reinstall Win2K to fix the problem, and that was what I was trying to avoid.

Thanks for trying to help.

Sounds to me like the shortcut is saving into both the user's profile as well as the All Users' profile. Win2k disapproves with removal of All Users and Default User. Removing these are what I really believe is the cause of your problem and simply create these directories again is not good enough as the system is the one that needs to make them. I would suggest running a repair process on your installation or reinstalling over the existing installation. Sorry, but that the only course I can see. Hope it helps.

Your answer was not quite what I was looking for. Eventually, I wound up having to re-instal Win2K to fix the problem, so, by default, I'll give you the credit, even though the point of the question was to avoid having to re-install if at all possible.

Later.

Is it an Icon Overlay?

by Charles Byrne In reply to Double Icons on W2KPro De ...

Hello,

Are the Icons the same and Together? I mean Can you Separate the Icons from each other or are there 2 icons, inseparable for 1 shortcut? Does the Shortcut have the little
white box with the black Arrow in the Lower left portion of the Icon?
