Double Vision Desktop

Hi, I have a client who managed to get a copy of his whole \Windows folder on his desktop wich caused instability in his system(Win98SE). After we made sure that was a copy and not the original, we deleted it. Now every single icon on the desktop is duplicated and when you delete one, they both go. Must be linked together somewhere in the registry. Can somebody tell me where to go and look to break the link. He is 1000 miles from me so I can’t search for it and I cannot replicate the problem.
