you will have to unistall the NTdetect, NTboot, and format your hd with FAT 32 Disk

the same way as you uninstall windows NT 4.0

First, you are ALWAYS best off to format the drive and start over.
It just prevents headaches.
Unless you upgraded from W98 to W2k, I don't know that there is a 'good' way to down-grade short of a format.

Second, is the W2K drive formatted as NTSF?
If so, at a minimum you need a utility such as Partition Magic 8 to convert the drive over to FAT32.

Once you have the drive formatted as a FAT32, you could mount the drive as a slave, or boot from DOS, and manually remove ALL of the W2K specific system and driver files. Along with deleteing the files in the root of the boot volume.
Then, boot from a W98 startup disk and run setup.

Any way you look at it, there is no way around re-installing applications.

NTFS is a one way street, even if you get the drive to change to FAT, you WILL lose all your data. There isn't any way to do it short of a reinstall, as any leftover 2K components will cause 98 to bluescreen constantly. Why would you want to go backto 98 from 2K anyway?

Good luck!

The most hassle free method of using downgrading is to get a Windows 98 bootdisk (if you don't have one, you can download it from bootdisk.com) and first boot without cd support. Then run FDISK from the prompt. Fdisk will ask you a question (can't remember it exactly) but choose yes. Then delete the non-dos partition (option 4 I think) and create a new primary partition (option 1). Follow the directions (I think it calls for a restart and then a full format). Then you're ready to install Win 98on a clean hard drive. Make sure you backup all your data a it's wise to download any necessary drives for your machine before formatting and put them on CD or Zip. Otherwise, be sure to download at least your modem and/or network card drivers so you can download an others you may need. If you're unsure about the effectiveness of this method, I have used it numurous times without a hitch.

Forgot to add, this method is only if you're win2k drive is formatted as NTFS. If it's not, just load up from a boot disk with CD-support, run FORMAT from the prompt and then install 98. After backing up your data and downloading drivers as mentioned above.
