Download Psion Organiser to XP PC

By Blackcurrant ·
Hello everyone

We use a Psion Organiser II XP where I work. It is used to store surveying data which is then downloaded to a PC. The PC is a 486 running Win 3.11. Although soldiering on for more than 13 years(!), this PC cannot last forever.

I would like to be able to continue to download the Psion Organiser to a WinXP PC. The problem is that the survey software (National Survey Software - SurvPro), which runs on the 486 will not run on the XP machine because it requires direct access to the hard drive which XP will not allow.

I have searched the net looking for alternative programs which will allow the Psion Organiser II to communicate with a PC but have not had any luck. I have tried Psi2Win which claims to be better than the CL.exe program (which I cannot get to work...), but each time I try to send files via the Psi2Win program I get a 'Device Write Error' on the Psion. The baud rate and the protocol on the Psion and the program match.

So, can anyone help me with this? Does anyone know of a reliable program that I can use which will allow files to be downloaded from a Psion Organiser II XP to a Windows XP Pro computer?

I will be very grateful if anyone can recommend a program.

This is something that I constantly run into with some software packages that where written for older versions of Windows.

You have a couple of alternatives here you can buy new hardware with XP Pro and install your older version of Windows as this is allowed by the XP Pro EULA which I know is expensive but it saves you the possibility of having MS come knocking on your door accusing you of Piracy.

Or you could use new Hardware with a Nix Distro installed and then run a Virtual Machine with the previous Version of Windows installed.

You should be able to run 3.11 as a Virtual Machine on a Nix Platform without any problems or you could even investigate the possibility of porting the application directly to NIX as a lot of the DOS programs are an easy porting job.

Good answer HAL 9000, thanks for answering. I was eventually able to use the CL program - what had happened what that I had been using Microsoft ActiveSync to download data from a handheld device. ActiveSync takes exclusive control of the serial port. It was not until I unchecked ALL connection options in the Connection Settings, freeing the serial port, that I was able to download the Psion. I am very relieved!

you cant beat the previous solution. Install MS Virtual pc on your XP machine and run your apps inside the virtual. New hardware, smooth operation, full compatability. Give him the points he deserves
