    Downloader.small – What is it?

    by rock lobster ·

I have a client running Windows XP, and AVG antivirus repeatedly finds a virus it calls Downloader.Small. Each time VG finds it, it “heals” the infection and all is OKI for a day or two and then the infection is found once again. I have searched the internet high and low in search of a removal method, and have not been able to find it. Infact, I have not been able to find out much about it at all except that it is some sort of trojan. I do not know if it is related or not, but my client mentioned to me that the trojan did not appear until after he had installed Kazaa (which is now uninstalled…….) Is there any possibility that this trojan is bundled with Kazaa? Any and all help will be appreciated!

      Not much Info

Interestingly, downloader.small is not specifically listed in either Symantec’s or McAfee’s virus lists.

It is listed in Sopho’s list.×70

Yes, it may be bundled in Kazza.

If your client ‘needs’ to use Kazza, have them switch to Kazza Lite. It has all the mal-ware stripped from it.

In some of the discussions I saw on downloader.small, it appears that it is in some web-sites and some MP3 files.

Another peer (mrafrohead) had a discussion a few weeks back aboutthe RIAA and some spy-ware that they were supposedly working on.
This may be in some way related to that issue.

I read through the info at the web site you mentioned, and found it useful. However it IS strange that there is so little information about this trojan on the web. Perhaps it is so new that there isn’t much info on it yet? Who knows! I downloaded, installed and ran the Sophos scanner and it found 2 instances of the trojan and removed them. I also had to disable the Windows Restore function before running the scan. Now all I can do is wait a day or two and see if it re-appears…. Thanks for your help!

I downloaded and installed the Free Version of Sophos antivirus and it detected and removed the virus. I uninstalled Kazaa and Shareaza and deleted the remnant directories and related registry entries and it appears to have taken care of the problem. Its been about 5 days now since the last occurance of the virus – havent seen it since.

        Just my 2 cents worth!
