Dr. Watson

By embela ·
One of our users keeps getting Dr. Watson on Internet Exporer 5 and sometimes on SQL application. The machine has Windows NT 4.0 and Service Pack 6. I have uninstalled the IE 5 and installed it, but Dr. Watson keeps pop-in back.

First take a look at Drwatson.log which is located in %windir%. There are a lot of entries, but maybe you can find one espacally entrie for an Dll or anything else.
Or take the tool Handleex from the www.sysinternals.com site.
Start the tool and make all actions till the failure occurs.
Another tool is debugview. With debugview you can connect to the wrong machine over the network, start tracing and if the users calls you take a look without leaving your seat.
Lot of fun tracing errors

P.S. Deinstalling software don't remove all entries in registry and all installed systemfiles. After deinstalling you can try regclean from microsoft, but I'm not sure that all IE5 stuff will be removed. In my eyes IE5 is not a application, is a partof OS

Same happened here. This is an ongoing thing that happens in our user base. It has been driving us crazy. One thing we found out was I had to go in and DISABLE Content Advisor. When that wasn't enabled I just deleted the user's profile and recreatedanother one. I know that is radical but I never found a better answer either. It could be something the users download et. Virus protection didn't pick up anything either. It might be something specific to SP6. I didn't have this problem back on 3.
