Drive connection problems

Ive got my work laptop and am connecting through a router to my adsl line at home to access all my work documents.
the problem is i get internet access but i cant access the drives stored on my office network.
sometimes i see them (but dont have access) and other times i dont see them at all, does anyone have any ideas on what i should do?
