Drive Letters Change

by gmusgrave . Updated 19 years, 2 months ago

I am running Win XP Pro. For several months my drives were configured like this:

A: floppy
C: hard drive
D: hard drive
E: USB hard drive
F: hard drive
G: DVD burner

**About** the time I installed some automatic updates (unfortunately, I don’t know if it was right after or if this is a coincidence) my USB drive and DVD burner swapped drive letters.

“Odd,” thought I, and I swapped them back using the Disk Management Console. Great…until I rebooted — they swapped back again. No matter what I do I can’t get them to stay the way I want them — as soon as I reboot, they do their own thing.

I have even deleted the DVD burner from the Device Manager. When I re-boot, XP detects the “new” hardware and installs it — as drive E:, moving my USB drive back to G: AAAAARRRGGHHHH

Unfortunately, I really need the USN hard drive to be drive E: Am I missing something here?
