Drive mapping in NT 4

By astonmc ·
Is it possible in NT4 to map a drive to a folder. I know in W2K it is possible but when I try to map a drive to my personal folder on this NT machine, using the format:
\\servername\computername\drive\folder\subfolder.,
I somehow cannot get a connection to that folder.I get the error message, "network drive cannot be found".

Am I doing something wrong?

Make sure the folder that you are trying to map has been shared. if it is a subfolder and does not have any sharing rights you cannot map it. You will have to map the folder above it to get access. Also make sure you can go through "Network Neighbourhood" to the server that contains the shares. once you have found the folder that you would like to map, right click on it once and in the sub menu that appears click on "Map network Drive"

That should sort it out for you. Make sure one the shares though. Make sure that the folder that you want to map is shared and has a share name.

Nope. Drive mappings connect to shares on remote systems. You have to navigate to the subfolder you want.
All you could do is map a drive to \\computername\sharename or
\\domain\computername\sharename

Hope this helps.

Actually Yes, it is possible to map stuff as folders in NT4.0. You can use the DFS (Distributed File System) download from microsoft for NT4 that emulates the W2K mapping possiblities.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/winntas/downloads/DFSNT95.asp (or just search the microsoft site for "DFS NT"
That will get you the information you need to set it up. DFS is at version 4.1 and you will need sp3 or greater loaded (I would recommend SP6a personally)Have fun

go to start-run and then type cmd. type in the following command

net use x: \\servername\computername\drive\folder\subfolder

that is it

you can map to any folder and not just shares as specified in the other responses.
