drivers

By galehickey2 ·
Prior to formatting I went to Device
Manager and took note of my display card
mfgr and copied the drivers. After formating
I copied these drivers into the System folder
However, after that the Add New Hardware did
not list the mfgr nor did copying the drivers
into the System folder help. I downloaded the
driver but it would seem that I could use the
drivers that were listed.Where did I go wrong? Thanks-

What went wrong?
Most drivers palce files in several places thoughout the Windows folders.
These include .inf files, .dll, .cpl, .vxd, and others.
Some of the files installed may have no reference in the name or properties that they are required by a specific device.

Some drivers even setup folders under the root, or program files.

They all need to modify the registry at installation.

With very few exceptions, it just isn't possible to copy the installed driver files from one install to another.

Besides, when you download the drivers for a new installation, you are usually getting the latest newest updated driver. ( I have seen a few instances where the drivers with the card were newer than the one's posted on the web site)

Many drivers do not copy over key installation files (such as the .inf) from the driver cd into the windows folders.
Without the .inf file, you usually cannot install the driver at all.
