Dropping Net Beui in VPN

By dellservicepro ·
What is responsible for maintaining both a tcp-ip and net beui protocal during a vpn over dsl connection. when we log onto our nt 4.0 with rras and 6.0a pack, we stay logged on but loose our net beui connection and this prevents us from seeing the network.

also, what low cost software is out there to further enhance the vpn experience?

ok am not sure about the latter part of this question about software that can further enhance vpn however i can tell you that netbeui is a routable protocol. And it does not work for vpn since it must rely on the routing table of your vpn server from the internet to the secure private network.

Netbeiu is not neccessary, the problem feels like name resolution, suggest running wins on the server, then change the vpn settings to reflect and point to the wins server.

NetBEUI is not a routable protocol. However, Microsoft runs NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NBT), so there is no reason you should not be able to browse the remote network. Make sure you are in the same domain, or that your Workgroup name is exactly the sameas the remote Workgroup or Domain name. Also, run a WINS Server on your NT Server. If you don't have an NT Server, configure lmhosts files on each PC.

If your using Windows 98SE or ME and/or Windows NT, your VPN experience is probably less thanexhilarating. You need hardware and software. Check out Intel's LanRover and Shiva software, or WatchGuard Technologies Live Security System.

Another good VPN product is from Sonicwall. They have serveral solutions. I have had good luck with them. The netbios is also not a problem.
