DSL Modem/Win2k Server

By PhiFEiZm ·
This is my first time connecting a DSL modem to a win2k server. I have connected win2k server to the modem with the ISP?s login(PPPoE) software but i am not able to view any internet pages either by IP or name. also, i am able to connect and add other computers to the server through DHCP but still do not have internet access oh any machine. what am i doing wrong? should i be setting ics? what should my DNS be? how about static routing? help is greatly appreciated!

DSL Modem/Win2k Server

You need to be able to get to the internet from the server before you worry about the rest of your network.

Things to check (on the server):

There should be something in the ISP login software that says something like "use as default gateway" or something else which mentions default gateway. This needs to be turned on.

This may seem obvious, but when you bring up the connection with the ISP's software, does it show as up, and does it stay up? It may be that the connection is never happening, or is coming up and immediately coming down.

When the connection is up, go to a command window and type ROUTE PRINT. This should print the routing table and the interface list. Make sure the default route is pointing at the ISP. The default route is the one with address and mask

Type IPCONFIG /ALL from the command window. Make sure that there is a DNS server listed.

Good luck.
