Dual Boot

By qball0193 ·
I have a laptop dual booting Win 98 and Win NT Server. First Server and 98 was configured for fat16. 98 was changed to fat32 and Server was changed to NTFS. This configuration was working perfectly fine. I could boot into both OS with no problem. I loaded Oracle 8i on NT Server and when I tried to access 98 I get the message "Invalid system disk. Replace the disk and then press any key." What could be causing this problem?

I assume you have two partitions since it's laptop. two things come to mind I don't think Oracle itself would cause either but here are my thoughts.
A goofy thing check in disk manager and make sure your partition with 98 didn't get converted to NTFS. Probably not but it's worth a look.
The second is your boot.ini more probable than the first one. if you have 98 installed on C: it should say something to the effect of c:\="Microsfot Windows" in the last line

Hope that helps

You obviously have two separate partitions. Though you haven't explicitly indicated that NT boots properly, I'm going to assume so. What you'll want to check is the boot.ini on your system partition. The file will need to lose it's read-only attribute before you can modify it.

Once you've opened the file with read/write abilities, make sure that there is an entry for your 98 system that is something along the lines of:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Server" /fastdetect
c = "Windows 98"

Either that or sys the drive with 98, then repair the boot sector with NT setup.

I'm assuming you are in NT server and trying to access the partition windows 98 is in. If this true you can not access the partition that windows 98 is in because the windows 98 partition is FAT32 and NT server nor Nt workstation can not see a FAT32partition. There is a utility you can download from www.wininternals.com which will alow you to view a fat32 partition but as a read only drive.

Your problem may ahve been when you installed Oracle8i,you would want to use the NT start up floppy disk and reinstall the nt server boot files.Restore the Windows NT
ntldr
boot.ini
bootsect.DOS
Ntdetect.com
