dual boot 98/2k NTLDR missing

By Charger Media ·
I stup 98 master, 2k slave. 98 was on a drive I already own, I purchased a second drive today and installed 2000 and when it's finished loading, reboots then says "NTLDR missing, Press any key to reboot"

I've tried every combo I know of in the boot sequence, and have reinstalled the OS twice, and keep getting NTLDR error.

When I installed 2000, I chose NTFS, do I need to go with FAT32 first then convert?

Also, I can't even F8 into safe mode, can't get to DOS prompt.

In the system info table on bootup, master and slave are both recognized.

Any idea on what I should do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried to boot from a boot disk?
If you haven't try it & see if you can see the information on your master drive, if you cant you will need to fdisk, format & reinstall 98 & then put 2k on. It pretty much hinges on if you can see win98 on your c drive. Make sure win98 can boot okay, if it does then try looking for ntldr yourself, if you cant find it then boot from the windows 2000 cd & choose the repair option. Choose the option that scans the boot sector & startup files which might dothe trick. If your still having problems, let me know exactly what you have tried & we'll go from there...

A few suggestions:
- Win2000 recognizes FAT16/FAT32 and NTFS (v.5),
- Win98 recognizes FAT16 (limit 2.1GB for max size of partition) and FAT32, then if you want to have both systems on same HD - use FAT32.
- You can convert only from FAT/FAT32 toNTFS, but not the other way.
- NTLDR is a hidden system file, which should be located in the root folder of your SYSTEM partition.
If you can still boot to 98, check ? can you see 2nd HD? If - Yes, format this HD with FAT32. Then from 98 try to install Win2000 there.
