Dual boot problem

By marioltan ·
I have a PC that has an ASUS P4B533 board, a 1.4 Gig Pentium4 processor, a 40 Gig hard drive, and 256 RAM system. I have configured it to run both Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, standard edition.

I installed Windows Server 2003 last so that it is using the Server?s boot manager. The problem is that whenever I boot from a Windows 9X diskette, I ruin the boot manager (I get the message stating that there is no fixed disk installed or something to that effect). And then I cannot repair either OS. So I have to install the Windows Server 2003 again to get the system to dual boot. Can anybody please help me out? THANKS.

i can see how a win9x *install* could cause your problem but i confess i do not see how merely booting from the win9x diskette could cause this.
please describe your win9x boot diskette and how you use it?

I ruin the boot manager (I get the message stating that there is no fixed disk installed or something to that effect). And then you attempt to put the system (Fat 32) onto the HD (with NTFS file system) ? This would screw up the boot manager every time as it would attempt to rewrite the boot sector effectively killing the boot manager.

Do not attempt to read/write to the primary HD boot sector for the Win 2003 as 9X cannot read NTFS. Will only read the 9X partition.

Win 98 will not recognize the ntfs partition.

You need to have a small dos partition that is bootable. It needs to be the first partition on the hard drive.

Xp can go on next. Then Server 2003.
